I've been an avid camper for most of my life. Got started when my dad would take us to the lake as kids and we would stay in campgrounds. Then I joined the scouts and started camping in the woods. I've always been a tent camper but now that I'm an adult side-sleeper, it is nearly impossible for me to get a good night's sleep in a tent. It's hard to fall asleep and stay comfortable without getting pressure points at my hips.
I'd always kept a sideways glance at hammocks but never really did the research. My main camping buddy recently got a 1-man tent and we no longer share a tent. Now I had my opportunity to look into a hammock for my own personal sleeping shelter.
I picked up a Grand Trunk SB UL as a trial and used it over the weekend. The first night I realize now that I set the hammock up way too tight. I was not super comfortable and I was not quite prepared for the chilling effect of the hammock. I didn't sleep great, but I did notice that in the morning, I still felt better physically than I would have in a tent. I moved my hammock to a set of trees that were a little closer together and increased the sag for the second night. I layered up better as well and man what a difference did it make. I slept great, only waking up to answer the call of nature.
I woke up and I felt refreshed, my back and neck didn't hurt. I am now officially hooked.
My goal now it to rig up a single line suspension that will allow me to have a fixed sag and possibly to hold up the bug net as well as the tent without having to run a separate line.
Thanks to all of the people that I learned from in my googling frenzy. Grizz, your videos are indispensable. I was able to set up a truckers suspension and have it work the first time.
