I have heard of, but never tried the Dakota fire. It was built a little different, but same idea. I would be more worried about embers coming up and hitting the tarp, then the actual fire.

Great stuff saupacker! I have done this a couple times, although I didn't use a shovel, I used a titanium "V" stake, was a royal pain in the A** but it worked.

For those who are worried about embers and the like you can carry a piece of fire retardant cloth (or whatever material you want) and use grip clips to attach it to the underside of your tarp. You can also carry a grill (like one of these http://www.purcelltrench.com/grills.htm ) and grill some meat over the fire (or seafood, or whatever you like)....

Here's another titanium grill similar to that one...

Finding wood that will burn with minimal popping would be a big plus when under a tarp.

That's very cool Saupacker. This Dakota stove, I've never heard of but it's very reminiscent of the pit oven or stone pit oven. It's an interesting idea to use it in this way.

Where I am from cooking under a tarp is just inviting unwanted guests to your campsite and/or your hammock.. I like to keep my food and sleeping arrangement separate as much as possible just to be safe.

I will, however set up a tarp to cook under if the rain coming down, but it is separate from my hammock tarp.

Great job. I've heard of the Dakota fire pit but haven't used it as most of my hikes are in areas where the soil is not conducive. But near water i'd be happy to try it some time,,,,i like that you went ahead and did what you wanted despite the general understanding of under tarp fires. I think i would probably have my tarp higher but to each their own after all in the end its your camp.
