Alright, I'm looking for some new backpacking spots! I'm in Chattanooga, TN. Me, my cousin and my brother always go to Virgin Falls, but that one is getting old. Anyone know of any two or three nighters that have water sources and aren't more than two and a half hours away (gas prices are to high to go any further)?

Check out the Benton Mackaye Trail. I think there's a bunch of sections within your distance. Also check out the Jacks River Trail.

The Fiery Gizzard Trail was a really fun hike, and it is in the Tracy City area. I had a hard time with all the rocks you have to climb over, and the climb to Raven Point was tough. I can't wait to go back though. It was dry when we were there last year, so water was a bit of an issue. It was available we just didn't fill up at the "last chance" and were running low before the next running source.

I have to agree with Ragnall, Fiery Gizzard is a tough trail but well worth the fight! In that same area "South Cumberland Start Park" you'll find 'Stone Door and Savage Gulf'. I hiked 18 miles this past weekend out to Hobbs Cabin on the North Rim of Savage Gulf. There's enough trails out there to keep you guys pretty busy through the winter, oh, and plenty of water!

Since these are just up form Chatt, in Tracy City (head to Monteagle and take a right) should take you about an hour to get there, maybe a little more but not much.

North Chickamaga Creek Pocket Wilderness ( Montlake rd off Dayton pike), Lots of good 3 day hikes in The Cohutta / Big Frog Wilderness, most of these are near a river or stream. Jacks River Trail and The Conasauga river Trail are my favorites. Sherpa Guides has good directions (sherpaguides.com)
