dont the shelter rules apply only to the AT in the park???
dont the shelter rules apply only to the AT in the park???
anybody have luck hanging their hammock inside any of the smokies shelters to stay out of trouble with the rangers? would it work if i scheduled that section, say in the fall, when it wasn't so busy? i'm too old to sleep on the floor, even for a few nights!
Just out of curiosity...
That's just the kind you drink (ethanol), not the kind you use as fuel right (methanol, denatured ethanol)? What's the purpose of this restriction anyway?
And what if, say for this section of the AT, you used the kind you drink for fuel... would that fly? i.e. no ticket?

If I understand correctly the only consumable alcohol that would serve as fuel would be everclear. Anything else would burn too poorly and leave too much residue to accomplish anything worth while.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Hey Rev. How are you and Flamingo coming along with that patent? Can't wait to see the pictures!
Everclear is of a high enough percentage to make for a clean burn, but I think that anything above 140 proof would work fine. (i.e. Bacardi 151 - Might leave some residue and water behind, but would work fine.) I'm just thinking that it may be a way to ... covertly... carry your drink without getting a ticket. Everclear would certainly be a lighter weight choice for many as far as drink is concerned, but really expensive to burn. I'm not suggesting this, just wondering if it would work. Any thoughts?
I'm not an alky burner so I am not up on the details. That's just what I've been told. So I bow to superior knowledge.
I have the patent complete and it is a dismal failure. LOL!! Who'd of thunk it. I updated my post on the submission thread and started a "Failed Vintage"thread. I'll be getting pics up by the tenth.

Nest is right about the shelters not filling up, but then again, he and I both went through the Smokies fairly early in the season. I saw two different ridge runners in the Smokies and both were very hammock friendly, or at least open minded. One 'caught' me hanging about 15' from the shelter and just quizzed me to make sure I was following LNT principals. Be polite and they usually are too.
Hanging in the shelters is easy. There are only a couple that I saw that would be difficult to hang in. Again, Nest is right, don't hang from a 2x6 that "looks" like a rafter but is actually only held in place with 2 nails!
As for off the AT, BY ALL MEANS DO IT! There are some fantastic primitive campsites if you come down off the ridge. Of course, it means you're going to have to walk back up, but it's always uphill anyway so whatever. I strongly encourage you to get a map of the Smokies (not from the ATC) and explore. From what I discovered, the AT is the ugliest part of the Smokies. It was just beautiful down below the ridge...and lots of water.
Early April 2007, 1 ranger at the first shelter all night, shared the trail and shelters with a ridge runner the next three nights, a different ranger on day 3 asked for my papers.
Everclear makes EXCELLENT alky fuel, but its expensive, and not better than mineral spirits. However, it is multifunctional, and the 2nd purpose makes for a relaxing evening... Might need 2 quarts to make it thru the Smokies.... http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/i...ilies/wink.gif
