    Ridgeline?

I haven't even had the chance to try my hammock out yet, but I can't help but think of ways to improve it. I think having a ridgeline to hang things from is a cool idea. What do you all use for one? I have a bunch of 550 cord, will that work?

    Thanks,
    Steven

Paracord is stretchy, but will work. Try out using a ridgeline. Then just go ahead and get some Dynaglide, or Zing-It 1.75 mm which doesn't stretch and make yourself a real ridgeline!

Ridgelines are super convenient for hanging things. Number one on that list would be a bug net. People also make pouches that hook to the ridgeline for putting eyeglasses, headlamps, etc. They call these "ridgeline organizers:"

You can make a ridgleine out of just about anything. BUT, keep in mind that, depending in the way you hang the hammock, you could have a few hundred pounds of tension on the line. The "proper" way to hang with a ridgline is to have just enough tension on it to keep it straight, but no more. However, I've seen people hang from trees that are too far apart and snap a 500 pound test ridgeline. If you plan to do this, go with dynaglide or amsteel.

I am not "proper", apparently. I just recently finished a WBBB clone (mostly used BlackGoat's plan), and played around a lot with ridgeline length. The most comfortable had the ridgeline guitar string taut, no give at all. I do love hanging stuff from it though! The gathered end from Knotty's plans was the same way.

Typically folks start at 83% of hammock length and then dial it in from there.

    Thanks!

What knots do you all use to attach the ridgeline to the hammock?

I tried to look for a video on how to set one up, but found nothing.

I have a dynaglide whoopie sling for my ridge line so I can adjust it. Fixed eye on the foot end and adjustable loop on the head end. I mark where the sweet spot is but depending on the tree distance I have to readjust slightly.

I'm very happy with an adjustable ridge line from whoopieslings.com, which I received last week. In addition I purchased two of the great Nanobiners from the same source so that I have carbiners on both ends of the suspension, making it very easy to clip things together.

Running lines through carabiners is the way to go IMHO.
