Good to know. Its just for the treeless yard, so travel doesn't come into the equation. A fly would be nice for nights I choose to sleep outside. Food for thought.

Couple months old but thought to add a couple things:
This is a photo of a tablecloth hammock I just made and picked up a typical bridge style commercial hammock on Craigslist for $30. This really isn't ideal but it'll do for now. The problem comes about having to over-tighten my 7/64's amsteel whoopies and ridgeline so the hammock doesn't lay/scrape on the ground. Maintaining a decent lay then becomes a fine balance of getting it to work with the whoopies and load bearing ridgeline. I'm not an expert for sure but I believe to the greater degree these lines are being pulled taunt to keep the hammock off the ground, to the greater degree there will be failure...
Had I known this, I would have made the suspension from 1/8" amsteel all the way across. Anyways, I'm going to extend the ends of the stand upwards with 2.5' of 1 3/4" pipe. I think
Mostly my hammock is going to be for some fun in the woods but in Vegas we have none. This spring I plan on some hiking in Zion and the Grand Canyon where hopefully I can give it a whirl. We have some parks and big mountains 1 to 3 hours away and that's it.
As you can see from the photo below it was quite a challenge to hang my homemade hammock on this $30 stand I got off Craig's List. It's meant for a patio hammock. Anyways, it hung low , way close to the ground and created scary line stress.
So, I went to Lowe's and found a 6' x 1 3/4" fence pipe and cut it in half. No drilling at all, it fit perfect. I put a 2" x 3/8" bolt in the existing hole on the stand and just extended the pipes 3' on each side. It's exactly 20' across at the top and 6.5' tall.

If the fence post are down in the hammock stand post about 4" with one hole for the bolt. They are working great and can hang my hammock in a treeless yard.
