You can do it there or on the AT. Just play it cool and setup and not make a big deal about it. People in the shelter will be happy to have the extra room.

Hey Whitefoot I along with 5 others will be hiking from Fontanna Dam to Newfound Gap next weekend Oct22nd-25th will you be in that area in that time frame? If so I really hope I get to see ya!

As far as I know. On the southern end of the smokies there is an offical campsite that is the site of an old shelter. It has bear cables and a water source. If you are concerned it might be worth a stop. I can't remember off hand where it is but it is in the guide book.
