    TX>LSHT>10/20-10/22 A to B to C O'nite Hike.

Space Weaseal and I are going to hike the LSHT the weekend of 10/20. Plan is for an A to B to C and back to A hike. Hike it in on our back, camp, hike again, camp, hike out.

We will be in the same general area where the Butt Bake was held, but there won't be any car camping or base camp aspects to this.

    Topo Map of local area.

Copies of LSHT Trail guide for this section

CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE AND ARE IN ALL CAPS

Tentative plan is to arrive Friday 10/19, park at PARKING LOT #1, then hike APPROX 1/2 miles DOWN THE LITTLE LAKE CREEK TRAIL to A CLEARING THAT CAVEMAN HAS LOCATED. Supper and breakfast at camp, then south along the MAIN LSHT TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH THE POLE CREEK TRAIL, THEN HEAD SOUTH AND LOOP AROUND IT BACK NORTH. Destination will be one of several campsites Spaceweaseal and I scouted during the Butt Bake in the vicinity of where the Pole Creek Trail intersects FS Road 211A. Total first day mileage is +/- 16.44 miles, not a grind, but not lazy either. Should give us time for a big breakfast and good supper with some daylight before sleeping. I'll bake biscuits Saturday morning.

The map shows two ponds on the trail, and one near the campsite. We know there is good dependable water at that last pond. It may be possible to cache water near the destination as the Forest Service supposedly opens those roads in September. We can definitely cache water at the road just south of FS211A as that is open year round, or where the trail crosses FM1097. All of these cache sites are near the destination.

Pics of the pond near the destination and FS211A can be seen here.

Hike out IS EITHER 3.5 MILES BACK ON THE MAIN TRAIL VIA THE WEST FORK TRAIL OR 3.05 MILES ON THE LITTLE LAKE LOOP TRAIL.

Sounds good. Let us know when you might be showing up at PL #3. I still have glow sticks left over from the Butt Bake and can mark the trail if you're showing up at or near dusk.

I've already got that weekend marked on my calendar as "woods". I am taking a group of college kids camping one weekend in October and possibly joining with several families on another October/November weekend. When those groups finalize plans and I know when they are I'll know if I can commit. In the meantime, I'll be watching this thread and hoping I can make it.

It'll be late evening, after work. Likely, near dusk.

Here is a much better map

I should emphasize that Friday night's proposed campsite is an unknown quantity based only on the Trail Guides description of "possible campsite" at that location. One should assume some bushwhacking may be required to find suitable trees. OTOH, the campssites Weaseal and I found will adequately support 6 or so hammocks within relatively close proximity and relatively free of undergrowth.

Checking Google Earth today shows the second pond to be covered in greenish algea, same as several of the ponds in the area. The first pond is shown as just a black hole in the woods and I can't tell if its shadow or that its fairly clear like the one in the pics. Plan your water accordingly.
