I want to take this opportunity to thank all those people in the Forest Service who have made planning for this trip such an adventure.

If you filter through all the information, there are three camps that are going to be available to us that have access to the 4C trail. On this map:

    http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5208745.pdf

    They are #17, #19, & #16.

I think its going to come down to who is going and what time they are going to get there, and what time they are going to leave on Sunday. Another factor is going to be parking availability at or near any of those campsites.

Camp #19 is 7 miles from the trail head at #17 (about 2-2 1/2 hours hiking). Camp #16 is approximately 9 miles (about 3-3 1/2 hours).

Camp #16 shows to be just off the trail with no easy road acess.

I'm starting to think that this whole thing would be easier after deer season when we can camp any durn place we want.

I'm ok with postponing....I've got a lot of other trips planned and I'm worried that work may decide they don't "need" me if I keep taking off every friday! (plus the oldest boy is coming home from college for this weekend and I'm sure momma would like me to be there) I'll keep an eye on this thread and see where it goes though.

Besides...I thought the original idea was to do more of the LST?

Dude...I'm totally down with a pre-fairfield Fairfield hang. I could actually be there about 6 or so.

Now I remember why I didn't do any backpacking last winter.

I wouldn't be able to make it that weekend anyway - gotta go on a scouting trip for crane research at Aransas.

It turns out that my college group will be doing a trip the first weekend in November and the families with young kids are leaning towards early December so this date is looking better for me.

Fairfield is a great place for a group hang or car camping and I may go that weekend just to do my annual recon / check-in with the park staff.

If you are looking for a backpacking experience, it does have a primitive area with about a two mile hike into the camping area.

My son and I hiked into this primitive campsite on Sunday after last year's hang. The campsite has some good trees for hammocks also a chemical toilet and water spigot.

At least we don't have to go to six different websites and look at three different maps to figure out where you can lay your body down.

    The map

    http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat...p4503_078h.pdf

(the only one we'll need) Shows it to be in a nice seculded location with a fairly extensive trail system that the website

    http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/fairfield-lake

(the only one we need to go to)

says there's 15 miles of trail.

It looks like its 15 miles one way, so we'll get 20 out of it easy.
