Q: How to hang in a hotel room?

I occasionally find myself in a developing country where the sanitation standards are somewhat less than what I am comfortable with. Has anyone mastered a way to hang in a hotel room?

On my last trip to such a place my beautiful wife contracted both malaria and dysentery. Since the bug netting was spotty in our accommodations, she may have been bitten at night. I think our hammocks with netting would have been a far more effective prophylaxis for the malaria.

Thank you for your comments, ideas and photos!

Here's Syb's solution for hanging in a hotel. Click: DOOR JAMBS (Post #41)

And you can make yourself a couple of Turtle Lady portable bamboo stands. Turtle Lady uses hers in hotel rooms all the time because she travels a lot.

See Turtle Lady's stand in hotel room:

That's two options, anyway. Good luck!

Pips, you beat me to my own old post! Depending on what you use for hanging - webbing or whoopies, you may leave a mark on the door jambs. Just be aware of that. I slept rather well considering it was a closer configuration than optimal but it worked.

I have also hung from two doors in a hotel. On one door I went all the way around it with a whoopie opened up all the way to go over the door. From the one picture you can see how I protected the whoopie from the hinge by a bit of old webbing. And on the other door I actually just wrapped the webbing around just the top hinge. Worked great for me and a few others who tried it.

Be very careful of doors especially in third world construction. The hinge is actually a very weak part of the attachment. They are often held in with smallish screws and if they go into substandard wood they can pull out very easily. Urban doors in upper income areas of the US are often outfitted with long hardened steel pins that serve to keep the door in place if the hinges are broken or sprung. It is not an attachment I would recommend. A stand is a much better solution IMO.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Just tie up to the sprinkler heads.
You'll have the added benefit of getting your room cleaned.

Here's an additional wrinkle. We are airline flight crew, so we are limited in what we can bring both in terms of size and the potential for confiscation by airport security. There is no rhyme or reason on the security part, especially in other countries.

Anyone have an ultralight rig that breaks down to pieces shorter than 20" and won't land us in foreign jail? LOL.

I've thought about hanging from door hardware with whoopies, but there aren't always suitably placed doors and I'd be afraid of damage. There must be some hard core hangers out there who have thought about this a bit. I'm willing to bench test any idea that will be packable in an airline roll aboard.

I've been sleeping in my hammock every night, wherever I go, for 10 years. Many hotels. Paul Zissou's method has never failed me (but I'm only 65kg). Use it on windows too, wood or aluminum. Or put the rope or strap over the top of the door or window with a toggle (or folded up towel, etc) on the other side to stop it pulling through. Or put the loop around a corner of the door or window. Once every few years I have to drill a small (6mm) hole in the door or window frame, or a roof beam, or ceiling, and put a screw in. Fill em with toilet paper or toothpaste before u go (LNT like...). Very light kit, about 100g - a very short screwdriver with drill and hex bit and 2 screws in a piece of alu tube - have been questioned 3 times by airport security, but always allowed through.
