Hammock Chair- Skychair clone

Somebody posted about Skychairs recently, they look so cool!. Well come to find out, my girlfriend had one. It was totally ripped and rotted out from many years of neglect. I made a copy, estimating the pattern as best I could from the rotten canvas. I used the webbing pole sleeves from the original chair, and was also able to salvage two of the original poles. The new chair was made with some unknown fabric that I had (looks like very heavy raincoat material). I doubled the fabric and used nylon webbing along the edges. It mounts on one of the auxillary attachment points of the recent treehouse.

I carry one of this same design, from Beyer. It's quite light. Comes with plenty of rope, and has aluminium rods instead of wood. It's worth the extra weight on backpacking trips. Great for a place to sit in snow season. It was only $34 from Campmore. Looks like it's more $$$ now.

What are the dimensions for the fabric? My front porch is begging me for one of those.

The top spreader bar is 20"
The side spreader bars are 30"
The width of fabric at the head is 20"
The width of fabric at edge of the seat is 30"
The curve along the edges are about 40"

A triangle piece of fabric finished size 30" wide and height (depth) 12" is attached to the top piece. I would go with a depth of at least 15" if I did it again. The triangle piece attaches to a top piece that is laterally symmetrical. When folded down the center of the back it forms a "J" shape.

My DIY version is not quite so deep as the original Skychair was. The foot of the "J" should have extended to a complete horizontal position.

Also, I was not previously aware that a knock-off was available, thanks for posting that, Psyculman. It is also about 1/4 the cost of the original! That sounds like it could be the best way to go, ...except for the satisfaction value of having made it yourself.

I know I'm dredging up an old post here, but I was wondering if anyone has considered making a lighter weight version of this. It looks super comfy!

eno makes these but are pricey, my daughters bought me one for fathers day last yr. very comfy

Yep. I like the Byer one a lot. Wonder if I could make something like that myself? If only I had the time for all of the projects I have rolling around in my head!
