    Hanging in a field

I'm looking for ideas how to set up in an open field. As a scout leader, there are times where we are set up in an open field (camporees). I've toyed with setting up two lashed tripods with stacked out lines to counter my weight, but not very successful. Any thoughts? Also I'd like to use as minimal equipment as possible.

I sometimes run into this situation also, but have always managed to wander off into a nearby wooded area to hang. I have also hauled in a hammock stand for Summer Camp with no issues.

Sorry, doesn't address your specific question, though.
    Maybe others have better ideas?

Search the DIY forum for Hammock stand for some ideas. Here's one: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=34776

It's all in the anchor. I have not actually made this yet (for a hammock), but I have used systems like this for troop monkey bridges since I was a scout.

This in conjunction with a Monkey bridge like A-truss or Tripod should work. I am toying with some ideas myself, but most are based on this with AmSteel rope. One day, I will actually finish this amazing project that as of yet only exists in my mind.

Thanks for the links Rob. I did a search for Hammock Stand, but didn't see these. I didn't think to use the word "portable"

Both are great reads. I think the Turtledog is perfect for the scout needs. I can see the boys each making there own set. I like that it doesn't need guide lines and is self standing.

search for boom stake. Alamosa designed a stake that will hold the tripod. I have used his design for a bipod portable hammock stand made from EMT conduit.

my son's troop has a premanufactured shade / shelter that is made from steel pipe and T&Y-type fittings. Its about 10x20. The cover is your usual white poly tarp.
The boys hang from the cross members.
You can set these up in any field. Sometime the pipe members get stuck in the fitting cause the boys are jackin around and put lots of stress on the connections. But with the proper persuation (sledge hammers and good ole cussin), we can usually get the pieces separated.

I found a rig that uses two 4' poles, each held up with two lines going out at angles, each line secures to a double nail stake rig. It held up my 210 lbs with no problems. The pole I used in my one-tree setup was 2 1/2" in diameter, but I'll bet a couple of 1 1/2 diameter bamboo poles would have worked for my weight. You might even find that 2" PVC pipes will hold up a scout. I have two videos out, Search Youtube videos for "hikerbyday" that display the rigging.

So, that's two 4' poles, 8 nail stakes (found at Walmart for $10) and about 50' of paracord.

Ok I've set up a rig using two poles and two guy lines each. The poles are 12 feet apart, the size of my tarp. After stepping back from it I realized, Its huge. Its tacks up almost the area of two tents. Thats a lot of space for one person. At times for camporees we just don't get that much space. I plan now to try the Turtledog. And to get a smaller tarp.

I made a Turtle Lady Stand, threw it in the car then setup. This worked for me and will help the Scouts with their lashings.

    Requires
    6 - 8' 2x2s cut to 6.6'
1- 10' Steel Fence pole - Cut in half
100' - 1/4" Diamond Braided rope (Don't use paracord) was $7.00 at HarborFreight.
1 - spool of Mason Line for guylines
    1 - 8x10 polyethylene tarp
