    Question Waterproof sock idea?

I was wondering if I use Ripstop Sil-Nylon to make a sock that would eliminate the need for a tarp. My idea is to sew two pieces of fabric (59"x3.5 yards) into a tube, with velcro on the seam facing the bottom as the entry. Each end would be a sewed channel (sorry if this doesn't make sense) that could be able to cinch tight with paracord running through it and a cord lock. There would be a ridge line either inside of it or it would hang from one outside. The sides of it may have tie out points to spread it out if I feel they need it.
I have the material to do this, and if experienced hangers feel this is plausible, then I'll start the work on it. If its not, I'll make a larger tarp.

Also, sorry if I didn't explain this well. Please tell me if there's a vague part, and I'll try to elaborate on it.

I can picture what you describe very well.
So well, in fact, that I can see the condensation dripping down the inside....

Just kidding, sort of. Condensation would be the thing to avoid. It would certainly need some venting, which you could do with the cord/cordlocks. Still, I would think there would be a potential problem.

Socks work best when it's too cold to rain. Then, cotton canvas socks are king, BUT make sure it is cold enough. Otherwise, breathable nylon with a DWR treatment is usually used.

Tarps are still used but, you could get away with a smaller tarp.

Let us know what you decide and post your results.

I expect to use this in the fall/spring to help block wind and be totally waterproof shell that will hold some heat. I expect condensation. If it really does drip a lot, I may make a "Breath Bib". I want to also be able to hang my gear sling underneath and have it covered, so I will probably try this sock. Any tarp I can afford or make right now wont do as good as a job providing that kind of coverage.

Didn't your mama teach you not to put your head in a plastic bag?

Condensation will be a problem and you really should consider venting for an adequate oxygen supply.

Eureka makes something very close, it called a crystalis or krystalis. Anyway check it out on here and other places and see how they worked for people. I believe condensation was a major problem.

There's the hangnout dirigible that has both sock and tarp elements, might be worth looking into.
    Good luck,

I always had condensation when I made and used socks. Vented them and everything. I put a lot of moisture I reckon.
Hope it works out for you.

Shug, you should have tested kwpapke's HHSS on Y'all's minus 27 adventure. I know he did fine ( I think he used the OC also ? ) but wonder how you would have done condensation wise? What with all that moisture you put out and all?
