If you promise not to poke me with the Dritz turner and if you will watch my back so that darn cat of GrannyPat's doesn't find me, I will be happy to show you what I have learned with whoopie slings and amsteel at the Hot Springs hang. I just use folded wire and an old shishkebab skewer.

Ah. Take a 2 foot length of wire, bend it in half. I like to mash the bend down firmly with pliers. Run the wire bend-first through the amsteel. Push it out where you want the bury to start. Once it sticks out a little bit, spread apart the two halves of the wire. Insert the end of the amsteel (maybe 1/4") into the bend, catching it in the bend. Pull it back through. Done! Let me know if that doesn't make sense. I'll take some pics if you want.

The Loop turner will stop that! Either that or using the yarn needles.

Ok I took pics. First the wire. I use 20ga steel wire (what I had). Take a piece. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412427.416749.jpg

    Fold itImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412453.397665.jpg

    Mash with pliers ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412475.199447.jpg

    Insert into the amsteel ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412501.216741.jpg

Push through til you get to the end of the bury then push it out ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412541.263164.jpg

Insert the end of the amsteel into the fold of the wire ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412592.255149.jpg

    Pull back through amsteel ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412620.451292.jpg

    Pull it out
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412641.798457.jpg

    Done.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347412704.769322.jpg

I find it easiest to not taper the end of the amsteel, or for buries that don't stick out, taper after you pull it through and milk the amsteel back over it.

I'm a visual learner, so I had to go to a video before the tutorials made perfect sense to me. I did go the tape route, and it can be VERY frustrating! If you have something to work as your splicing tool, you'll be in way better shape than I was! I just tested mine out today, and I'm positive that I can do it again now that I've had one go with it. I need to order some more amsteel and some tablecloths for my next DIY project! Hope this helps!

I'm getting a pretty sweet deal on amsteel through my job right now, so I may have to bring some to hot springs. Once you get the hang of it, splicing becomes almost an addiction

I have amsteel on the way and am looking forward to my (second) attempt at whoopies. This time I will be working one-handed! Thanks for the thread, Michelle, and thanks everybody for the tips (pun intended) on tapering.

    Matt,
You made what I believe I now know to be called a fid. I don't happen to have quite that much wire around, but once I get some, I'm trying your method. Thanks for photo spread, too
