My preferred way, which allows you to use the full length of your guyline or use less guyline, is to use a prussik girth hitched to the tarp and a bowline at the stake end. This also allows you to adjust your lines from under your tarp.

    My favorite knot site:

    Bowline for the tarp.

I also use an taught line hitch sometimes for the ground side.

I have 10' of guy lines at each end.

Maybe I'm a simpleton, but I use larkshead at the hammock and marlin spike hitch at the stake end. I think it was Syb enlightened me to the marlin spike hitch for stakes. It just never occurred to me you could use a marlin spike hitch for anything but toggles!

Bowline to the tarp, but not the way you might think. The bowline is tied without the tarp, I then feed the line through the tarp loop and then bowline loop. This way I can eeasily remove the guyline without ever having to untie the bowline. One could use any type of loop knot to accomplish this as well.

For lengths, three are 5ft. The other is 6ft, but as 3- 2 ft lengths in series which I can use to extend/shorten wherever it is needed (this is done with a sheetbend). This is why I need the quick change loops.

At the sapling/stick end (I don't use stakes... don't need em), I use a tautline hitch.

Never thought of having the adjustable part near the tarp.

I see a new project to fiddle with on my next trip.
