    What am I doing wrong?!?!?!

    First ever hammock hanging attempt.

Found some ripstop nylon at wally world today for $0.75 a yard, decided to make a hammock after the idea for an 8x10 tarp was thrown out due to non water resistant fabric construction.

    Dimensions: 11' long x 60" wide
Sewn channels at either end with whipping, and 1" hem sewed on either side.

PROBLEM: Major sag in the side walls, does not help to hang the hammock loose, or super tight. How can I fix this??

    Thanks
    Travis

You didn't do anything wrong to my eyes. It's the nature of the beast. I would suggest a more diagonal lie. I find that helps to reduce the flapping and spread the hammock wider.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Wow, ripstop for $.75/yd. So your hammock just cost you about $3 to make. What a deal.

Yep, the diagonal lay looks to be the problem from the pics. You look like a banana in there. Lay on the diagonal and you'll be flat and that will soak up most all of that "sag" you're worried about.

You can add a ridgeline too if you find you have a problem getting lay to be consistent.

    Yep... Diagonally...

Also, get some straps so you don't hurt that tree...

+1 on the nature of the beast. Look up the Knotty strech-side hammock.

I have also had success with cutting the outer ends off a little before doing the whips. If you hold up the fabric by the short side, I measured from the top corner in about 6" and then down the outer edge about 2". The cut this little corner out, repeat on other 3 corners. Sewed a channel then ran a cord through it and pulled tight for the gathered end. It gets rid of the floppy sides, but makes it harder to sit in, as the sides are tight and push up under your legs. I have a few that this worked with, but have switched to the stretch side now.

You may want to try laying at a little more of a diagonal, IMO.

    Good luck.....RR

You need a Knotty mod. Problem solved. Look in the DIY forum for a sticky titled Stretch Side Hammock. Basically you'll put a short piece of shockcord in the hem on opposing sides with a cordlock. Cinch it up and it takes the floppy out of your sides and you don't have to worry about the tension ripping it cuz of the shock cord. It also somewhat creates a footbox and headbox on a diagonal lay.

+1 on that being a great deal. cheapest around here has been $1.50
+1 on trying a diagonal lay
also the side sag can be influenced somewhat by how you gather the ends
    good luck and welcome!
