I am an experienced back-country camper but very new to hammocks. I am planning a solo canoe trip in September and plan to only use a hammock and tarp for sleeping. I am borrowing my son-in-laws ENO Double Next with rain fly but believe the fly is too small for my purposes. My September trips can get very wet and windy. I intend to purchase a tarp and need some suggestions.
I would like a tarp that can do double duty as protection over the hammock when sleeping but also be used as a shelter during the day with some coverage over an open fire. I am considering the size as well as the style of tarp to get. Ideally, I would like something big enough to pitch over both the hammock and the edge of the fire. Has anyone used a set-up like this? Does a rectangular tarp make the most sense or would a tarp with door flaps also work?
Appreciate any ideas and experiences.
