I have made hex tarps and I have made gathered end hammocks. It's a lot easier to make a hammock than a tarp. Also, waterproof materials are more expensive than non-waterproof materials, generally (there's the occasional fire sale).

That's why tarps are more expensive than hammocks.

I agree with AngrySparrow....the TARP IS your Primary shelter and the hammock is just an accessory...a suspended bivy.

Besides...all good things are worth the wait.

You can get one for under a $100.00 at Etowah ultralight outfitters. I love both of mine.

My hubby, Bigfoot2, just bought me an Arrowhead Toxiway in LYLAC Isn't he soo SWEET? The Toxiway is a great deal at only $95.00 and Paul has always been super fast to ship things out.

    Buying a tarp...

Are you car camping...then weight is not a problem
....go with the bigggest cheapest tarp you can find

Are you backpacking....then weight is an issue
....silnylon is the best bang for the buck
....cuben is the most $$$$ but weighs the least.

Can you sew...then check out plans for a Black cat tarp and make your own

I own 5 tarps right know, each one gets used depending on the time of year and weather. I am taking a sewing class (with the wife) at the local community college to learn how to use my (our) thread injector so I can try making some of my gear.

If you want a decent sized inexpensive tarp that already has tie outs and what not, see if you can find a British DPM Basha. If you can find the real ones they are very durable, water proof and only mostly heavy (22oz). They measure at about 8.5 X 5.5 which isn't perfect but they work.

I actually keep one in my Jeep as an emergency roof when I'm running no doors or top.

That's not a bad idea. The shipping on eBay.co.uk to the US is ridiculous, but I think I have a workaround for that...

You may have hit the nail on the head!
