Remember, it's cheaper in the long run to pay once for a good tarp than to buy multiple cheap tarps.

And AS is correct. This is your shelter. How many times have you seen cheap tents in a campsite with multiple tarps draped over the top. I have never had to do this because I've just saved a little longer for a quality piece of gear. But that's just my opinion.

I read this, thinking, ohhh he has a DIY hammock, or one of the table cloth hammocks. Then I look over, under his name and find out that he's swinging in a WBBB. Plenty of tarps that are cheaper then this. Check out WildernessLogics. They have some really nice tarps also, IMO.

And AngrySparrow is correct, the tarp is a very key part of the set up. There is much more to a tarp. Comparing tarps to hammocks is like comparing apples and oranges. Both look good, but completely different flavors. There is a lot more material in a tarp and the cost of said material is alot more. Just saying.

two things contribute to the cost of a tarp: workmanship, and materials.

You can get a suitable tarp made of silicon-coated 1.9 nylon for around $80 from canoeing outfitters, e.g. Cookes Custom Sewing (and there are others...google is your friend). Get involved with lighter weight silnylon though and the price goes up 50% due to materials.

As others have pointed out, think of the tarp as replacing your tent. Would you hump a cheap one into the woods and expect it to protect you when the going gets rough?

I got mine second hand but mosquito hammocks has 3 tarps at 50, 50 and 60. Mine is 50 new( I paid 30) and is the diamond fly that's 13' by 10'. I had it covering me and my sons hammock. I am not sure I would have been dry during a bad storm but for one it would have rocked.

don't forget you can use the wtb section as well. If you want to buy one of these lesser tarps and maybe pay under 40 then just ask. Someone may have one they want to part with.

Shelter is a priority in the piney woods....especially for a backpacker. Keeps the wind and wet and snow and hail and sleet at bay. And you gotta carry it so like most things you get what you are willing to pay for. In a survival situation....shelter is the first call.
I have 4 tarps...two silnylon and two cuben.
    They make me happy.
I also spend money on good cake and pie)))))

I discovered the other day that my poncho is long enough on the diagonal to be a makeshift tarp in case my blue poly blows out (until I can afford a proper tarp). It even has grommet holes for that very purpose. I'd hate to be stuck under it for hours during the day but it would give me time to make a plan.

I support what others have said about perspective and the cost of tarps. When i got into hanging in 09 i bought a WBBB. When it arrived at the door i was happy but not overly so, ( not talking about workmanship here). I noticed folks had multiple tarps and was curious as to why. When my tarp arrive,OES MacCat Del., i totally got it. It didn't really occur to me till i set it up that this IS my shelter and its worth spending $$ for that. Then i wanted more tarps (-: .
    BCUSA ,( Bushcraft Outfitters),has a 10x10 for $60. Multiple tie outs,,good quality etc. But don't hesitate to spend $$ on a good tarp,,,you won't regret it.

Don't buy twice, consider the cost of the cheapo tarp (25.00) a discount on a good one, cause you will buy a good one in a matter of weeks after buying a cheaper one, solid tarps can be had for 100.00 or less, i scored a ahe toxaway for 80.00 and can't speak highly enough of it. I also DIYd a car camping tarp with some heavier, but bomb proof stuff from fabric depot for about 30 bones. HYOH.

As for OP, You get what you pay for and imo if cuben are on expensive side than silnylon quality tarps from cottages are worth every penny to get it.
Fo me OES MacCat Ultra had been for me hi end price but glad I picked it.
thanks ... i didn't know he stopped selling it

it's like i always say... you get what you pay for
    you buy a $15 tarp ... you get a $15 tarp
it's cheaper to get something nice the first time than to get a cheap tarp and turn around and get a good tarp .. trust me we see it all the time

I was the same way back in 07 when i started hammock camping.. i was shell shocked by the price of gear and back than we didn't have as many options as we do today there was only a handful of vendors that made hammock gear
one of the thing that opened my eyes was when i started to make my own gear
and i seen how much fabric and materials cost
even making your own gear your not saving very much
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold
