    Undecided in KY

    Greetings!

I'm convinced hanging is for me, but I may never actually get to since I can't decide which hammock to buy!

They all sound perfect when you read the descriptions, and I'm a sucker for a good sales pitch. I like the Hennessy, the Blackbird, the Traveler, and especially the Clark Ultralight. They all seem like they would work, I'm sure they would, in fact, but which to buy? Are the more expensive ones actually better quality? Which suspension system? Where do you put your pack at night? Your boots?

I don't play outside when it's cold so I'm not worried about quilts, fortunately, I'm like a 2.5 season outdoorsman with bad joints. But still, information overload!

Anyway, I'll just be here, lurking, reading, pulling my hair out...

Maybe by next summer I'll have made a decision...

Doesn't matter which one you buy, just buy one. Pretty much all the known manufacturers make quality hammocks. All the ones you mentioned certainly do. Which one is better is strictly personal preference. Your best bet is to find a hang in your area and you can check out a wide variety of hammocks there.

The latest trend in suspension is whoopie slings but there are several options.

Hang your pack from eyour suspension or a tree. Boots can go under your hammock or hang from your suspension.

You should reconsider the underquilt. Most people need something under them when it gets below 70*. You could with IX, either diy or from Molly Mac. They're relatively inexpensive.

Just remember the most important thing is you start hangin. Don't worry so much about gettin the perfect hammock because your first probably won't be your last. So just buy one and get your butt off the ground.

Look in the "outing & trip planning" forum for a group outing near you and go! Take your old tent with you, no one will laugh, we've all been there. Or, buy a cheap ENO from your local big box store and come to the group hang. If you eventually decide to go with a different hammock, you have a backyard hammock for little expense or pass it aling to another newby

Welcome to HF! Im here in Lexington, got a bunch of hangers in this area, not so many I know in Louisville though. I recommend you buying "The Ultimate Hang" to answer all of those questions of yours, you can get for hard copy, nook, or Kindle.

Lot of folk here have made their own, you can get the material at Hancocks or Joannes, and without sewing, you can whip one up and try the feel itself. +1 on the post about looking for a hang close by, I think some folks in area are doing a hang soon in Mammoth Cave area.

    Welcome from south of BG.

Know that whatever you buy if it is not a fit for you there is an excellent classifieds section here. The more expensive hammocks do not last long at all on there. So if you do decide to drop some coin on a nicer hammock and it doesn't fit your style you can re-coup most of your investment.

If you are just interested in summer camping an army surplus or wal-marks CCF sleeping pad will get you started (for cheap) without getting a cold rear-end. Then you can think about UQs and what-not.

    Whoopies are nice.

Get a hammock and a tarp and give it a go.
