    Crawford Lake Hike on Snowshoes

We’ve been curious about potential “stealth” opportunities in on the trails around Crawford Lake Conservation Area for some time now and final got out for a little reconnaissance. It was a great day for a hike on the Bruce trail, there wasn’t a lot of snow but it was enough to break in a new pair of tradition Faber snowshoes (Christmas present). We stopped for midday break and a hang in the hammock chairs, during which, I field tested a new DIY Stove design I’ve been messing with. Crawford Lake has a reconstructed Wendat (Huron) Longhouse Village form the 1400's, had to get a couple of shots of that before calling it a day!

Thanks, we don’t normally post for day trips but the way this winters going, this may be our only chance to get snowshoe shots, it was 10c (50f) and raining yesterday so most of that snow is gone . The Longhouses were closed when we got there; I want to go back for a tour at some point.

Thanks! We had a blast at Crawford and will be going back for sure; we found good stealth opportunities on the Bruce trail (outside the conservation property ). The Snowshoe trails in Crawford are well groomed and actively used; it’s a great place to develop skills and test out new gear!

I got a new pair of modified bear paws for Christmas, these are the same shoes I used in Algonquin last year, not really designed for the technical terrain on the Bruce (slops & scrambles) so I had difficulties but I wanted them for deeper snow in Back country where breaking trail is the biggest hurtle. For Crawford and the Bruce, Mick made the better choice sporting a pair of Faber Hybrids; the teeth (crampons) enabled him to keep the shoes on where I had to take mind off to get up the escarpments between Crawford and Rattlesnake.

Traditional Shoes take a bit to get used to; they are great for staying on the surface of deep snow (floating). The decks are larger/wider than technical shoes so you need to adopt a wider stance/stride to avoid stepping on the opposite shoe and getting tripped up. It took a bit but I find them very comfortable and easy to hike in now.

That was a great hike....my new snowshoes http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows....jsp?locale=en worked really well in the conditions, trails with loose snow and inclines that were more packed and icy.
The winter recliners are a thing of beauty, especially on a cold day. The heat just beams back at you...I felt it through 2 down sweaters and a windbreaker. I never used to stop much on my winter hikes from years past but it's nice to stop and enjoy the quiet and have a brew....sweeeeet.
I've said it before and I'll say it again....it's good to have a friend with serious DIY skills.
