I had one of my straps that had frayed, tear and drop me. I was lucky in that at the time I had hung my hammock in a room over a garage that had carpeting. It still knocked the wind out of me. I now replace any webbing that gets frayed on the edges.
Was the strap not seated properly on the Dutch clip I wonder? Looks like the force was being exerted in the wrong direction. Good that you were not too hurt.

I now will always make sure my DutchClip is pointing up. What I think happened is the webbing must have been draped over the hook when I sat down. This would not have happened if I'd been more careful. I did replace both my DutchClips with the older model that is a little beefier in that area.

I think this happens more than we hear about. The forces on horizontal rigging can be enormous and can be multiples of body weight, not to mention knots, hardwear, sharp edges and bends can reduce the stated strength of lines and straps by over half.Originally Posted by hikingdad

Not that they would admit it but I wonder if it happens to the gram weenies more then the idiots like me who carry 60lbs in to the woods for 2 days? I am working on lowering my weight both inside the pack and my skin.

Yep I've been on my butt as well. A lot more painful but nott near as embarassing as rolling into the mosquito netting, and getting trapped and needing a giggling wife to help extract you. I must say I am a big ole boy, and the netting held up. Good stuff.
