A Case For Wearable Quilts

I use my wearable quilt as my camp insulation on some trips. I use my camp insulation to augment my sleep insulation on others. Both methods are trip dependent as is whether I use a canister stove or alky, UQ or pad. There are many ways to skin a cat, and sometimes the cat makes the decision.

I really like the idea of a wearable quilt but rather than something I would wear on a regular basis, I personally see it mainly as a back up in extreme situations were my usual insulation is just not enough .

The extreme situation might involve temps dropping much lower than expected, exhaustion, etc.

That makes a lot of sense ... I could definitely see the advantage to that.

This is what I've been using as my TQ and wearable quilt... Its not the lightest but the fabric on the outside is fairly rugged, and has a great DWR property... not sure if its a treatment or the fabric but I've worn it as a poncho and it shed pretty **** nice...

I'm not a gram weenie and as a large farm animal myself, I often OVER pack because I can... pack light, freeze at night. I used to be very much a minimalist when I was in the service but while I still have the back and legs to carry some comfort items and the wallet to buy them, I do.

I took this "Mountain Serape" down to about 35 degrees last night with the HH SS as my underquilt. I was cozy in some long underwear.

Certainly if you're not big, the pea-pod use for a hmmkr is "awesome", whether you're luxuriating asleep while frost nips the buds, dancing or meditating neked by a bon/campfire the night before, or huddled in yer down over an itty bity alcohol snuff tin, 1oz wt, (wet).

Another economical reason to take these seriously, no disrespect at all to JRB, is that they've been a failure in the much larger market of ground dwellers. Following the aforementioned Rip Waverly's thread and or / sale here at HF, I followed sales of new high-list-price Expeds of this design on ebay. Some sold, new, for pretty cheap in true auctions. Note that they come / came with a couple of different temp ratings, and maybe in long length, too.

i've been waiting for the weather to turn out this way to put the wren back to work.

to note.. if using the wren as a pod -- it becomes virtually useless as camp wear, unless you like fiddling with your gear all day. *but to note, in the use as a pod... i also bring a puffy coat and "tiny down throw" to use as insulation in the pod.

its less about weight savings, and more about having a versatile system, that works well both in the hammock game, and when ground dwelling.

certainly love the points and counter points ,,, but most of all enjoy hearing about peoples systems and learning some things.
