They can be used for either or both. Some people prefer one long skin, called a python skin. Or, if you want, you can place everything, quilts included in them, if you get the Lazy Slug tubes. It is all up to you what you want to use them for, or not use them at all. HYOH.

You can use them for either. My sense is that they are primarily used for tarps. I use mine for my MacCat Deluxe tarp and think they are really easy for setup and packing. I like to rig my tarp, but keep it in the skins until I actually need it.

I am using the set that came with my first hammock from Hennessy, even though I don't use that hammock anymore. I know Wilderness Logics makes a huge set that you can stuff your hammock into without removing the underquilt. I like my hammock in a double ended stuff sack and my tarp in skins. That is just one way, though.

Both.....I have the silnylon ones on my hammock to make it quicker to set up and they'll keep the hammock body dry if I have to set up in the rain. I have some netting ones on my tarp, also to make it quicker to set up and take down. These are just a little lighter and theoretically will allow moisture to escape. More to the point, when I get back from a trip and they're damp from dew they'll dry out really quickly while I'm drying my tarp.

I've used them on both and I've also used them just on the tarp with a Bishop bag for my hammock. I guess I always use them on my tarp.

With the tarp skinned you can look at the stars and still deploy it quickly if the weather calls for it.

In bad weather you can have the tarp deployed and skin the hammock so that you have plenty of dry space to hang out with fellow campers.

Bottom line. Try different options. See what you like, then HYOH.

Snakeskins (old HH) for my Hammock Gear Winter Palace

(Stuffbag for my now almost retired JRB 8x8, funny complete JRB 8x8 setup weighs the same as my complete Winter Palace setup, just packing volume changes...)

Drybag for the hammock, another drybag for the insulation... Although I might change that (back) to 1 drybag for insulation and hammock...

+1. This is how I do it now. I've used tarp and bishop bag also. I prefer skins on both for now. I need to try a slug and see how that works for a faster setup. HYOH.

I keep going back and forth with them. Right now I only have the tarp in the skins and cram the hammock into the HH stuff sack. If it's nice out I like to keep the tarp stored in the skins so I can have a little breathing room while in the hammock.
