    Propane Heater, heating hammock?

How many use little propane heaters, in winter.. to keep warm Or take chill off while in hammock, under a Tarp that is closed up around them.

I plan to Make my Hammock, 4 season.. for winter camping. And with in walking distance of Truck.

Or bad idea, beings its Nylon and sticks to skin when on fire. yikes.

I keep a Guinea pig in my pack. You just feed him (or her) grass, woodchips, etc. while on the trail. They're very warm, soft, and delicious if you run out of food. You can't eat a propane heater...

I've considered using a small heater or my iso-pro stove as one inside my tarp in real bad winter conditions...but, your better off relying on improving your overall insulation system instead. Unless you plan on camping in some severely arctic conditions, you'll find it much safer and less risky to bring in more insulation (especially if you're within walking distance of the truck).

Flame in an enclosed space doesn't just pose a fire risk, but also the CO risk as well. You'll want to be waking up pretty darned often to vent the tarp for fresh air if you leave it running (YIKES!) or have to get up just as often to turn it on and off trying to keep your shelter warm.

Instead, make good use of your insulation system and sleep safe, warm, and sound. If you're freezing in the morning...walk to the truck and fire that puppy up til the heater takes the chill off the bones.

Whew, I wouldnt try it, or if I did it would be so ventilated, in full dbl porch mode, it would be ineffective. Sil nylon tarp and a nylon hammock, bug netting....noxious fumes aside I keep picturing the Hindenburg. The downside is just too bad.

There are units out there that have a very clean burn. I wouldn't sleep with one one but i did use one for ten yrs just to take the chill off in the morning getting up and at night going to bed. The only down side was it created a bit of condensation. Not sure about how light these would be these days. Mine was kind of heavy

I think for that to be effective you would need to have the tarp tied down and pretty tight to your hammock, which would trap the C.O. inside. I may not be a hammock expert but I do know combustion (G1 class gas fitter and oil burner mechanic, among other things) and I wouldn't want to risk it. Especially when your gonna be asleep in that shelter.

I have a pair of hand warmers than burn lighter fluid. If full.it probably lasts 6-8 hrs. The larger size would probably last longer. The small ones are great in cold weather. I use them mostly on the motorcycle, but iv also put one in my wife or daughters sleeping bag when they were cold. Kind of like a hot water bottle but smaller, not as hot and probably longer lasting.

The Coleman Blackcat catalytic heater works fairly well and can be used in an enclosed space. When I camp in chilly weather with the kids we use it in the tent. We stay warm and dry with it going. It is not lightweight however...so no backpacking with it.

I haven't tried propane but I've been known to burn a few sticks to take the evening chill off.

    Huh ?!?
I'm picturing mittens with flames shooting out of them. Might be way cool, but I don't think I'd take `em to bed with me!

Maybe you need to set me straight . . .
