My brother lives on a boat at a marina and has access to gobs of old, unused sails. What would be your opinion on making a new hammock and a tarp out of sail cloth?
Not strong enough? Too heavy (in some cases, with some of the canvas sails)?

They would probably make great deep winter canvas socks - Grab 'em!
I think you might have SOMETHING there, as a former blow boater myself, the only sails I ever replaced were in horrible condition. Meaning they would have lost any and all water repellency, rendering them useless as a tarp. Usually the material was so heavy I would imagine your looking at a 4-5lb hammock, unless it is spinnaker cloth, with some questionable breath ability. What you might have is an endless supply for heavy duty stuff sacks or bear bags or maybe sunshade material..?
Yupp, grab `em!

Well, here's the deal:
I used to live on a (different) boat in the same marina. There are several abandoned boats there, and what happens is sometimes sails disappear from certain boats that have been unused for a year or a few years. It happens. You probably don't wanna leave your boat untended for a year or two in this marina (but I suspect if you leave your boat there for a year or two untended, you don't care much anyway).
Regardless, the sails in question are generally in good condition, having been properly stored out of the sunlight in their sail bags...just in a new home now.
That said, they're not sails that have been replaced, just...liberated from their former home.
(Note: 99% of the time, they're off boats that the dockmaster has foreclosed on because the dock rent has gone unpaid for a year or more. Don't be thinking it's all sail-stealing crooks out there. )
The sails on my boat would not work I think. The cloth is way too stiff to make a hammock of, and while a tarp would work they're also heavy.
THere are probably sails made of better material out there, but you'd have to get lucky that someone discarded sails like that.
Or maybe i'm just too picky
Is it legal to "liberate" said sails that belong to others?
Years ago, in my kite making days, i was able to by scrap ripstop by the poind from a sail maker. Multiple colors in various weights. I can't tell. Generally about 8-10 foot by 42". I don't know if its been treated or untreated. How do you tell? I was planning on using it for UQs and Socks.

Why "liberate" such a heavy piece of canvas that will take some adaptation anyway? Just go to a local group hang and steal a lightweight Cuben sailcloth tarp from there.
