VIDEO: Glacier Lake near Lake Tahoe.

My buddy "Thunder" and I spent this weekend doing a quick overnight "shake down" trip where I was trying out several ultralight backpacking techniques including my first backpacking hammock hang.

I had a lot of fun filming it, I hope you enjoy it.

Nice vid. However, I might suggest that you'll get more views if you significantly shorten the length of your videos. I've found a direct correlation between number of views and length of video (longer the video, the less people watch it).

Breaking a video up into multiple shorter segments also seems to increase views.

Great video. I have a large dog as well and trust me, get him saddle bags. They can safely carry a lot and mine really enjoys doing it.

It was great to see your old gear to new gear comparison. Thanks for the map at the start. Not only were there cows, but a real genuine cowboy! Couldn’t see if he had a six shooter strapped on though. Get yourself a nice light backpack and you’ll be all set up to go light.

Super cool and colorful view from your campsite! Your fuzzy hat is a good idea, keep that close and handy for the cooler months ahead. Your gear summary at the end was great! Get yourself a top and bottom quilt and a nice light pack and you’ll be very well set up. I was going to suggest light shoes too, but you already worked that out. It took me ages to work all that out! lol

I really enjoyed your video, GregB, thanks for posting it and I hope to see you again, but next time with the new pack and quilts! Make a trip report of that big walk you plan to do.

Really nice video. Really like the "coma on along" feel to it. One thing i appreciated is your consideration for other hikers having your pooch on a leash , somewhat absent in my area. I think for three season you could get away with about 2-2.5 lbs for TQ+UQ. i have a ULA circuit and like it allot. They make a good pack. Have you thought about a little saddlebag setup for your pooch. He could carry his own food and water. Anyway Thanks for taking us along.
    Enjoyed that.

Thunder has a small saddlebag and I've used it once or twice before. The problem I have is that he loves to go swim in the lakes to cool down or to get a drink and I'd either have to make sure that everything in that saddle bag is water tight or remove it every time he wants to swim (which is a lot).

You really think I can get a TQ and UQ down to under 3 pounds? I should play with the under quilt calculator and see how lightly I can build a 30 degree TQ and UQ. My 3 to 3 1/2 pound guess was for a super warm 3 degree setup which I could use all year. I had considered making 2 sets of TQ and UQ: one for 3 season; one for winter. But balked at the cost of building 2 of them. But if I can save another pound or so it may be worth building the 3 season quilts first since that's what I'll use most of the time.

I'm getting a lot of positive feedback on the ULA packs. I really think that may be the pack for me.

And yeah, I prefer keeping Thunder on a leash. I don't want to be "that guy" with the annoying dog. If Thunder runs up to somebody to say "Hi" they have no idea if he's friendly. So I just keep him on a retractable leash with a "Gentle Leader" on his head.

Also, when I put the leader on he knows he needs to behave differently and he follows commands much better. That way we both know what's expected of us and we both have a better time together.

Was a long one but worth the watch!

Thanks for sharing and you gotta love that dog!

I heard/read somewhere that it might be better to give the dog a constant weight (not changing like consumables water/food)... Have no idea behind the truth but I get the 'rationale'...

    Looking forward to more vids...
