ember underquilt

i had it and returned it. it is NOT well designed, and not warm at all. i called ENO and they don't have a temp rating for it. talked to a tech and he didn't have a rating but guessed it would be between 20 and 40 degrees depending on how you warm you sleep. when i told him i was disappointed with their work on this, he told me that there are down products in the works, at around $300-400 dollars! i bought a Yeti.

wow just did a price check. eno ember $175 plus shipping. a new river uq from AHE is $155 plus i think it would be $20 shipping $175 and I think you would be much happier. or even a jarbridge for $100.

Jarbidges are on sale for $85, New Rivers are 140-145 and free shipping at $150. But regular shipping on a New River is $15 and change in the US.

I got mine for free so I won't be returning it but am hoping to give it a test before Christmas. I am dying to get in the woods and would like to take down to the teens. I will be using my down bag plus my pads with wings and the ember. Should be an interesting test.

Wouldn't touch the ember for that price. ENO needs to do some homework before their next product hits the market. This is the only place I've seen any data for it. I also called ENO and was dissapointed by the info they had.

I would not touch eno underquilt with a 12' pole.

I am heading out this weekend for a test. Temps are supposed to drop to 18 at night. I have a 30 degree down bag, ember underquilt, and 2 ccf pads in my claytor hammock. I will also supplement with some down clothing attached to the bottom of my hammock, a fleece blanket if needed. I will also have on plenty of layers and chemical hand warmers.

I have taken my setup while backpacking to freezing with only 1.5 ccf pads and no underquilt. This weekend should be a good test and the car will be close by just in case but I am looking forward to seeing how this underquilt performs.

*Disclaimer* I know that the is underquilt is nothing compared to Jacks R Better or any of the other great down models out there but this one was free and it is what I have to work with for now.

I used my ex's ember in November and was freezing it was only about 40. Make sure you have enough backup warmth.

I love Eno products, but don't waste time or money on this UQ. I bought a New River UQ from Paul a few years ago and never looked back. You wont be disappointed. Have used it at least 100 times in all types of weather. Have had it to 23 without any other bottom insulation.

Went out to Stone Mt. State Park NC this weekend for a test. They called for a low of 31 and I had my Marmot 30 degree down bag, a wal-mart ccf pad, and the ember. I was warm all night long.

I wore under armor cold gear, a midlayer fleece, a fleece vest, hat, and wool socks.

Not sure if the temps actually got below freezing but i was warm all night. I did take out the pads in the morning and and lay back down and was quite cold. The ember also struggled to stay connected until I ran the shock cord around my cinch buckles. It also favored the right side of my hammock and didn't fully emcompas the hammock at times. I only noticed when laying on my right side and my butt would get cold. Once it was readjusted it was fine though.

All in all the ember was a nice add on but I wouldn't ever rely on it for warmth. Mine was free so I didn't spend any money on it so there isn't any reason for me to be upset about anything. I do feel comfortable enough with my set up to take it down to the mid 20's very comfortably. It would just be a heavy pack.

It was also very windy all night and I left my tarp in porch mode and was still fine despite the cold breeze.
