    Video: Mt.Sterling in GSMNP

    Hammocking:
at 02:14 message to mbiraman from BC
05:28 using the SEEP of the Dirigible as a simple cover over me
07:59 wrapping the tarp portion of the Dirigible tightly around the hammock
    sock for severe wind
09:00 Neutron's single layer m55 tested for 2 nights by Poof, makes me wish
    I was 30 pounds lighter

This hike was a killer on both of us. 3000 feet of gain is one thing but the Pretty Hollow Gap trail was realy rocky and the loose under the feet type of rock, insult upon us as the last mile of the Pretty Hollow had recent trail work and it was like walking in sand or snow-2 steps up one step back.
The first campsite 39 would be an awesome group hang site, 2 miles from Cataloochee and maybe 200-300 feet of gain but almost limitless trees to hang from. Campsite 38 on top of Mt. Sterling was very reminiscent of Roan=big wind and very cold; but the views from the tower well worth it.

Special thanks again to Gredemeer for the MSR Titan mod, to Neutron for the opportunity to test the m55 hammock, to DrZooz at BPL for the custom Ti grill for the FireFly.
Great trip and I'll be sore for a few days:

Thanks Brother! The hike hurt me but I did the cycle thing today...sore or not the C/O is just 2 weeks away.
There is no doubt that HNO (Hangnout) is a genius. The thing I did with the SEEP this time just laying it over me was just another time Hangnout was reaching out and keeping me warm!
The full wrap thing with the tarp, i'd only do that in extreme wind and it was on Sterling that night...compared to the first night when I slept with the tarp portion thrown over the back and the SEEP fully down--3000 feet up made a big difference in everything.

Good stuff Medicineman. The music was very fitting. Loved seeing the elk. I was below there few weeks ago on Big Creek, beautiful area.

    Thanks for the video.

Hello, MedicineMan! That was a nice looking hat rack at the start of the video, must have been windy, because it kept swaying around all over the place. Very nice camp spot, and your stick pick, or whatever it is, works just fine! Great view from the swaying fire tower.

Oh, an Elk, I thought it was a wonky, wobbly, and slightly shabby looking hat rack you attempted to make, using your... ahem, highly evolved bush craft skills. lol Amazing photos at the end of what looked like a brilliant hike! Thanks for the video, MedicineMan!

    MM,

Thanks for sharing your latest hike. Living about 2.5 hours south of the GSMNP, I try to get up there as often as possible. I haven't hiked up the Mt. Sterling trail to the tower yet, but it is now on the to-do list. That view was mighty impressive.

    Yet another gorgeous video, MM!

Never seen an elk in the wild, m'self. Looks impressive. How far away were you from it? You've definitely got a steady hand with the camera, so it's hard to tell.

I've heard tell that the DWR on M55 is impressive at wind blocking. Did Poof find it decent at that in the breeze up there on the mountain? Or was it like a ripstop hammock, and not very effective at wind blocking?

Liking that TI grill. Might have to DIY one out of stainless here in the near future to go along with the hobo stove in the "winter" down here. It'd be nice to be able to cook a steak or somesuch out there on shorter trips.

3/5 of a mile of elevation gain? That's rough. I may have missed it, but how long was the walk in for that gain?

Looking forward to your canal trip here in the near future. Love your biking trips!

I'm planning a Mt. Sterling hike soon, but I was planning to take my tent. (don't throw rotten fruits at me!! ) This past saturday I was right across from Mt. Sterling at Mt. Cammerer. You're right, the wind is no joke at Sterling, it was blowing hard at Cammerer too.
