Mostest Bestest Uber TQ shell material

Hi folks. I thought I was gonna start saving for drop shipped M50 for a new incubator, but in all the reading I did here in the threads, I generated a little doubt. SO...

What would be your prime choice for fabrics for a TQ shell? Still M50? Love the weight and apparent windproofness.... Would a combo of fabrics be the ticket?

Also, maybe slightly more appropriate to the DIY forum (and I DID read and check each and every of the mentioned vendors under the "fabrics" thread), anybody know of another vendor in addition to thru-hiker that even sells M50?

Thanks a ton, and happy autumn!

The M50 is a nice fabric. I like the hand of 7D or M55 better against my arms, but they are mythical fabrics unless they do another run.

Have you considered 10D not as silky as 7D bit pretty darn close IMHO.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

I agree that 7D is wonderful against the skin. I have yet to play with this wonder fabric called M55. I want a hammock out of it.

With that said, I currently use M50 for all my quilts. Not as light as cuben, but it feels better and breaths well enough. If I get warm in it, I slip out from under it. It's why I use a full bug net: for when I'm not under a quilt.

    'breaths well enough'

So far I'm loving m50 for shell material with one exception-its minor but best be known. When stuffing the quilt it does take a little longer for the air to get out; and as you'd guess a little longer for fluff up to downy goodness. Fair trade off for the wind resistance and high water resistance.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, looking at those mentioned so far:

M55 and 7D are fantastic, but unavailable (but how would both compare in weight and wind resistance to the M50 anyway?)

10D gets a nod, but how does it compare to the M50? FWIW the hand is important, but in giving a rudimentary feel of my newly-acquired M50 UQ, it seems like it would be fine for a TQ (usually wearing enough clothes that I end up just "feeling" them anyway).

I can see how cuben could be dicey not letting water vapor pass through.... still leaning toward the M50. (Wanted orange n black, but nogo on the orange, so maybe red n black)

Lastly, anybody got a source other than Thru-Hiker? Just curious...

Thanks for the input so far.

I just got a couple 10D TQs from Hammock Gear and I definitely like the feel of them. The one night I spent out with it there was a good breeze and I did not have much for tarp coverage so the breeze was comin through my hammock if I rolled to my side pulling down the hammock wall on the windward side. The 10D did a fine job of blocking the breeze. IT wasn't a strong breeze but it was steady. Although with good tarp coverage you shouldn't really be dealing with wind in the your hammock.

I plan to get an M50 UQ next but am a little concerned with it having sufficient breathability to let moisture pass through and not get trapped.
