See, being in a tent feels less safe to me. A lot less safe. You can't see out. Also, you're on the ground with all the snakes, scorpions, tarantulas, bugs, fire ants, and all the stuff that sticks, bites, or stings you.

I'd much rather be suspended. Then treat the hammock and straps and webbing with permethrin and I'm golden!

I think it's due to the fact that it's a foreign concept. It never occurred to them to use a hammock as a shelter. I personally don't think of a hammock as a replacement of the shelter, the tarp and the net are the shelter. A hammock replaces an inflatable mattress, sleeping pad or ground tarp. If you look at it that way, it's pretty reasonable.

Hardcore? Why? Hardcore because one is "roughing it"?

As Nessmuk so aptly wrote, "We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it."

One of my favorite lines when I am hanging with ground dwellers is, "Why rough it?"

They think your roughing it until they are up at the crack of dawn stretching their stiff backs and hips while you're still sound asleep. then you wake up a couple hours later Completely refreshed and ready to go.

A couple of guys in tents came by the campsite SilentOrpheus and I were sharing. "You guys are hard-core campers!" he said. "You're tarp campers!"

"Tarp campers?" SilentOrpheus said. "We're hammock campers."

Hammock camping, I agree, is the antithesis of ground dwelling. We're into pleasure; they're into pain. Pleasure is groovy.

If I want people think I'm hardcore, I leave out the hammock part all together and say, "We don't bring a tent to the Boundary Waters."

all you have to do when camping with ground dwellers, as you lay in your hammock in the early morning, is listen to the folks getting up and coming out of their tents. moans, groans, grips, ugggs etc.

Be quiet, we don't want them to know! If they find out, there won't be enough trees left for us to hang from!
