Like others said, once you put your other gear on top of the hammock setup the weight will compress it more.

    Hammocks weigh less

No doubt I could lighten my set-up. The DL 1.7 could go to a single 1.7 or 1.1. The big hex tarp to a smaller sil tarp. Ditch the mummy bag for a tq.

But realisticly how much weight shaving would that be? I can't really quantify the savings in volume so I just have to assume that it will come with the weight savings.
I think at first Hammocking can be heavier. I would not agree once you get into. I have a full hammock set up, tarp and everything and I am lighter than i was with a Squall 2 tarp tent (great tent if you want to sleep on the ground)

My hammock weighs total with tree straps and everything 13oz. My tarp weighs 14oz, with stakes. My Squall 2 tarp tent weighs 38oz. I pack a quilt and some type of pad with a tent, i do the same with a hammock. Some substitute a underquilt for a sleeping pad, but that is just trading weight. And the big plus is I made it all myself.....pretty sure i could not have made the tent
