    Is this too much bulk?

My set up seems quite bulky to me. It takes up a large portion of my Gregory Z55 pack all by itself not including food, cookset, clothing and rain gear.

Pictured is my Mountain Hardware 32 bag, Leighlo 3/4 30 uq, WBBB, tarp and stakes. Is this the bulk that can typically be expected?

Nalgene thrown in for reference as well as yard stick (inches).

I have the Z55 as well. I can say that my TQ, UQ, and hammock take up a little less than half of my pack. I keep my tarp and stakes in the outer mesh pocket. Switching from a full SB to a TQ will save you a good bit of the bulk, and don't be afraid to really cram those quilts in there. They will come back for what seems like extreme over compression.

It isn't as bulky as it looks. most of it will compress more and conform around other stuff in the pack.

I use a pack liner, and load my quilts in loose (not in their stuff sacks) so they will conform to the pack and the other gear in there. That way once I get it all loaded, those things really compress down.

+1 on that. I know one of those quilts will compress to 1/2 the size of the current stuff sack shown. It is better to have the stuff sacks not fully compressed to shape to other items.

I also pack my quilts in a garbage bag in the bottom of my pack. They conform to all the other items utilizing the full pack.

Plus, when you can get one, a top quilt will save some space as opposed to a full bag. Other than that, that's normal, plus the compress more as they are stuff sacks, not compression sacks. My pillow, hammock, tarp, tq, and uq all fit in the sleeping bag part in my pack. Down is they way to go for packability.

+1 exactly the way i do it. i also pack pack laying on its back that way the quilts hold food and other things against my back. closer gear is to my back the lighter it feels.

I started second guessing the logic I used for deciding to go hammock instead of tent in the first place the other day.

I had never been a backpacker until a few years ago. So I had a clean slate.

I was lead to beleive that hammocks were lighter and less bulky methods of camping. Now I am not so sure.

No doubt I could lighten my set-up. The DL 1.7 could go to a single 1.7 or 1.1. The big hex tarp to a smaller sil tarp. Ditch the mummy bag for a tq.

But realisticly how much weight shaving would that be? I can't really quantify the savings in volume so I just have to assume that it will come with the weight savings.

Another Z55 user. Also another advocate for bagging the stuff sacks for my insolation and just shoving it in the bottom of a liner.
