What kind of winter this year?

Well, 2 and 3 years ago, winter was pretty winter like even down here in north MS. Either lots of snow or lots of cold ( by our standards ). Then, last year seemed like Fall at best all "winter" long, sometimes more like real early fall!

But, I was in Branson, MO yesterday and it was quite cold. And I noticed that it was 8*F at Cold Springs, WY!

Wow, single digits 1st week of October. But I have learned you can not make an accurate judgement based on how it starts. But, if I was up there with my hammock, I sure would want some good insulation under me!

Last winter was pretty mild here in MI. I'm hoping that this coming winter is more normal. I picked up some snowshoes last year and never really had a chance to put them to use!

Most of the area is in prime fall color right now. It seems a bit earlier than normal. Trees seem to be dropping their color quickly - I think that is due to the dry summer we've had. It's getting colder every week, so hopefully the lake effect snow will be here soon

Breaking that snow all day on ups and downs is.....Tiring)))))) Just trying to control the sweat and not get soaked is a skill.
Short days and long nights and making miles is a challenge. I am always put in my place by the Snow Gods.

I am going in there with a very humbled approach and have the mind set that I am a guest out there with those Snow Gods being the boss. There will be many trips to the trail before hand to test out difficult sections with Tala and practicing things to become second nature, like sweat output. Tala and I have already been training on the physical part too.

I'm sure we'll see each other at a fire before then and I'm hoping you guys drive the fear into my head if I start sounding over confident.

I love the beauty of winter but for hiking it usually kicks my butt. Around here its allot of moderate cold, damp snow and steep terrain so needless to say i don't go that far. The woods in winter are so quiet.

Up here in Minnesota we need moisture, lots and lots of moisture. I hope it is in the form of snow. If the el niño lasts through the winter we will have a mild one.

Pretty normal last winter, looks like it could be a bit dry this year , but who knows. I like a couple of feet of snow on the ground for insulating ground water but other than that i would just like it cold enough for good driving.
