    DIY family camp out

I have been working over the last year gaining experience and knowledge from the great group of people on this forum. I have tried my hand at some different projects and have finally achieved one of my goals. To make an entire set up for myself and my son. So here is our first family DIY camp-out over Labor Day weekend. We camped in a Corps of Engineers park on Lake Degray in Arkansas. All that you see was sewn, cut, spliced or hemmed by me. It has been a lot of fun creating the pieces but it was great to take it all to the woods and use it as a family. Two nights in a row I slept 10 hours in my hammock!!

    My setup

Both tarps were made using the silicone/mineral spirits dunking method, both bugnets were made from WM curtain sheers with zippers installed, his under quilt is a modified summer sleeping bag, mine is made using 1.1 oz ripstop and quilt batting.

My wife's hammock and an extra hammock for guest.

The green hammock is a tablecloth blank and my wife's is "Duck Dynasty" pink camo I found at a fabric store.
Now to convert that huge down comforter to top quilts and under quilts

Great job of creating your gear. Looks like everyone had a comfy time in the piney woods.
Everyone ought to believe in something....I believe I'll go set up the hammock!

Wow, super nice job! I appreciate your quest, since I'm on a similar one - diy everything except suspension for my son, husband, and myself. I can only hope that our gear turns out as nice as yours!

I'm jealous of you here. I have the same goal in mind. I'm currently trying to convert my personal set up into all DIY gear first.

Looks awesome, latriper. Seems you've got the DIY bug pretty bad.... Have you ever tried making a backpack?

    Sorry for the late response.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words. It has been rewarding but at the same time frustrating. I wish my skills were better when doing other projects like quilts. I guess practice will help over time.

I do have it bad. But that has come with some positives. Due to all of my post on FB, and my incessant talkng about the joys of hammocks, I have been asked to make some hammocks for friends. So now people are going to pay me to DIY! Talking about feeding the addiction!
I have never attempted a backpack but after reading your post I did look up some examples and it made my head spin.I think I better stick to straight stiching...at least for the immediate future.

There is a video on youtube by jeff spate that gives the how to but the mixing ratio seems open for debate. 3:1 silicone to mineral spirits seems to be popular. That is what I roughly followed. Having said that, I just ordered 8 yards of silnylon seconds from DIY gear supply to make my first true silnylon tarp. The others are working fine but I needed to make one more for my wife.
