I'd have to say add me to the list of people that are VERY uncomfortable leaving ANY gear behind. I'm not much of a 'camper', but I have had several tree stands stolen. Cheap, $25 tree stands for archery hunting. The thief had to climb a tree on private land without easy steps to get at it, but he did. A quality hammock/tarp set up right at itchy finger level would be gone in a flash.

How 'deep' I'd be with stolen gear determines how paranoid I'll be at camp. Re-hanging my set up is easier than sleeping without it! If I'm campground car camping and will be away from camp for any length of time, my gear will be locked in the truck.

Since I'm in the Neo crowd, I'd wrap my stuff in my camo tarp and stash it somewhere before I'd leave it out to be stolen.
The harder I work, the luckier I get.

At Traildays a bunch of folks left their hammocks up for the whole weekend. I don't think anyone had a problem. Would you leave yours up at Traildays or pack it back in your pack?

Speaking as one of those folks, there was almost always someone in camp to watch over the hammocks. Even then, I was nervous about being away for too long.

Yep. I got a funny feeling from a few people from nearby towns that came to TD. For $5 they got full run of the camping area, and visibility is just too limited in those woods for my liking. You'd have to be within a few yards of someone to actually see them there. If you feel locking up your gear is necessary in the area do it. Not worth losing $1k worth of gear.
