Samwise is crate trained and I am pretty sure he would like his own little space. We (the family) went car camping recently and my son could not find his rain fly so I took my Hubba Hubba out just in case he needed to stay dry. Well the dog slept in the tent alone and happy all night... which is what set me on this train of thought. Like your girl, dink712, I don’t think he wants to see out much...like his crate at home. Looking at it online, I am thinking I might be able to mock up something similar to the Sea to Summit thing out of solid ripstop. Should be light, just the weight of the fabric and a couple tent stakes. Tie the top to my suspension…maybe a piece of poly pad as a floor/winter insulation....

It really does help if your pup is crate trained. Mine loves her crate, so a small tent might be the ticket.

You know they make gear hammocks for gear, what about a small bridge hammock that is really close to the ground for your dog?
You could even have some small supports going from each corner to the ground, so that it wouldnt flip over or rock.
hmmm, very interesting. I have noticed the same just at the house sleeping in the hammock stand. My dog, if she hears/smells something at night, will get up and patrol, growl and wake me up. Which is nice I suppose if it was a bear...Now last night she slept quiet and did not wake as I had wrapped on tripod of the stand with a tarp, and it gave her a enclosed area. Further testing as she is a new pup, but I am interested as to what you come up with for easy packing.

I had exactly the same idea as you and am currently in the middle of completing my project. Basically think of an oversized mailbox shape with one end zippered and opening like a mailbox. i will put a couple loops on top and string it to my hammock suspension. Of course mine will be much smaller as my dog is only about 14# but when I get it comeplete I will try and write something up on it.
here is a quick sketch of what I am thinking. it will have a double layer floor that I will be able to slip a CCF pad into for both insulation and padding for my dog. The general shape is like a mailbox and the front will have a zippered opening and will flop open like a mailbox. you could potentially use a stick as a spreader bar between the two tabs on top or instead run a line to each end of your hammock. Its just a concept at the moment but should have time to finish it up in the next 2 weeks or so.
