Pretty ingenious... I don't like the hammock as others have mentioned, but it's a nice start.

I'd possibly be interested in one for car camping IF it could be modified to fit different length hammocks. Does anyone know if that would be feasible? Coming up with a solution for the tarp wouldn't be a problem.

You should just have to change the length of that center red line, the one that determines the space between the supports' base plates. I'm not sure if that would necessitate a change in support pole angle, though.

I might have to try this with my trekking poles. I have some MSR Surelock UL-2 poles, which should be some of the best for taking linear weight without slipping (since their locking mechanism is not friction-based). As long as I do the math right, and get the angle perfect, the load should be straight down the pole. I can get them cheap, so it's not a big deal if I break one or both. I just hope I don't fall on top of one when it breaks! Something like this plus a pair of ultralight tent poles (for the tarp) would have allowed me to use my hammock last month in the Tetons.

If I do this, I'll be sure to video it for the amusement of HF members. If you're planning on getting hurt, you might as well catch it on video.

So far I've just seen videos of a person laying on this hammock with their feet, head and arms hanging over the sides. Does a person even fit in it? How about fit in it with a diagonal lay?
