I have felt your pain. I use copper wire from CAT 5 cables doubled over which acts as the eye.

I have used thin floral wire with good results. What size zing-it are you using?
I used a big needle (don't know what it's called) for yarn, but not the biggest. Opened the weave up a little with some coated floral wire that I cut the coating off of.
It took forever, but it got the job done.
I used to be a somebody, now I just camp.
When using wire don't just fold the end over. Fold the wire completely in half so that the two ends of the wire never go into your zing it. That way there is nothing to snag.

I've also spliced 'til my fingers were blistered...
I use small gauge wire like that as well. Works well for me.
Started using fishing leaders, have worked the best for me, kept cutting myself with guitar strings!
