    Making Whoopies

When making Whoopies or anything of that nature (just generally splicing amsteel, I guess), why is the taper so important?

so that it doesnt create a stress spot at the end of the bury. dont know if that makes any sense or not. i made some a while back without tapered ends and at the spot coming out of my hammock the amsteel started to look really worn and the were even some split steands. i made another set with tapered ends and they still look brand new.

#1 The end of the taper (where the bury goes from thick to thin) is the weakest point in the splice. In many tests, this is the exact point that fails first.

#2 The taper makes it easier to pull the bury through.

Thanks. I'd heard a few places that the taper was "the most important part," but I wasn't sure if it was for ease of pulling through the bury of structural.

well it does make it alot easier. also i found that using blue painters tape rolled (around the tapered end) into a point makes it very easy to work with. all i use is a pen and a pair of scissors to make my whoopies and i can make a pair in about 20-30 mins.

I plan to make two pair tomorrow night, and will probably use the same method. Thanks for the time estimate.
