    advantages of sewn channel

my new hammock came in today, and while i was at the park testing it out, i noticed that the whoopies that came with the hammock, where just prusik knotted around the whipped ends. it was upon inspection that i noticed the hammock had sew channels. what is the advantages and disadvantages of using the sew channel to put the whoopie through, as apposed to just around the whipped end?

If I understand properly, you're referring to the channel that would run across the end of the hammock, if it's laid out without the ends whipped. The thin whoopie line would eventually chafe through and then the material would be easier to tear out or un ravel.I may be wrong.
Nothing to see here. Keep moving.

It is mostly a matter of personal taste, I think. Some folks like the lie(lay?) of the whipped ends, some like the end channel setup. My DIY uses the end channel. I have an Amsteel dog bone wrapped through there twice, so there isn't really any movement that could wear through the nylon. Once it is pulled up tight, it isn't going anywhere. I think many users like the peace of mind of the whipped end just because they don't worry about the stitching giving way on a channel end. I am by no means no lightweight, but I don't sweat that on mine.

This really doesn't happen and is of no concern.

There is little advantage to either attachment method (IMO). The larks head attachment gives you the option to "pull the corners" and/or try different folds to adjust the feel of the hammock. Attaching through the channel adds 2"-3" to the length.

Before using the channel, confirm that it has the strength to be used that way...I recommend more than one row of stitching.

There are times that using the channel will allow some more hammock material to be used (how I have my GT UL's since they are already short hammock to begin with and every bit counts to me).

It's a wilderness logics lee owl. It's already 11ft long, so I don't really need the extra length. My GT UL has the whoopies going through the channel, and i've had no issues with it. I'm sure the stitching on the lite owl is much better and stronger.

Lee owl's are cool too! I left mine as it came - it fits me real nice.
