I've been sleeping out for at least the past ten days without a bug net outside of Westminster, SC. I haven't seen any and haven't been bitten, but I treat my gear with permethrin.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!

Bug net will add a few degrees. What section are you doing? I'll be going out four or five days before Thanksgiving. Probably mid- Virginia.

I was out weekend before last on the Coosa backcountry trail sans bugnet and had no problems at all.

Yea, what Eagle says. I get about 5 degrees out of my bug net, so even if I could take it off, I would not.

If bedtime temps are predicted to be below 60, I leave the bugnet at home. I see no reason to carry something totally unnecessary. Even if a bugnet adds five degrees of warmth, it adds 20 degrees of annoyance because it's just an unneeded encumbrance to me. My back really appreciates it.

I used to be anti-bug net in favor of the but net's weight in added down.
After seeing the Darien UL I may change my mind. It is so efficient in its
use of bug net material it may tip the favor in degrees to having it in place
for the shoulder seasons. Below 20F then the original argument holds that
I'd rather have the bugnet's weight in down-even if only 1 ounce.

I'm in Raleigh... I wouldn't expect skeeters up there in mid November, but it's more about the prevailing weather and location in my experience. I don't know that section of the AT, keep in mind that elevation makes a big difference in temperature. Neither am I an entomologist but I don't believe the little demons can fly below 50 degrees F.
