I've heard of people using ponchos as tarp doors for cat cut tarps. Can somebody explain how this is done, maybe with a picture or two?

Think it through. Tie one side together and hang it from the ridge line. Stake out the two edges on the bottom. One edge to each side. Probably need a few extra lines to stabilize it. To get fancier pull the bottom shoulder out into a peak so the wind hits a slope instead of a flat wall.
With most ponchos, you'll need to mod it with some tie outs. Grab some 3/4" or 1" grosrain or webbing. Sew on a loop at each corner. Maybe another set at each mid point. Practice setting it up in the backyard or a nearby park. Youll prolly need a s-clip or carabiner to attach the poncho to the tarp rl. Then stake out the edges to give you a sealed end.
The extra loops dont hinder the poncho as far as functionality go, it does add maybe an ounce or two.
Heres one example.

Thank you! You all just saved me another $300 for another, bigger cuben fiber tarp! Guess I should go out and experiment a bit before I go too far with this.
Theres always the ever useful clothes pin.

If you go to the 5 minute mark you can see how I use my poncho while on the trail to make a door cover. I can still use it as a poncho during the day too.

Here's how I used to use my GI poncho as a Grizz Beak. On my hiking trips, I've gone over to a much lighter tarp and poncho/undercover, but I still use this on my biking trips. Since the video, I've added two grosgrain loops at the shoulders of the poncho to be able to tie out to either a stake or a tree to prevent flapping towards the hammock.
Hope it helps!
