Critter problems is why I have a Clark NA. Has a pistol pocket where I stash the bear spray. Handy just to the left of my shoulder when I am in hammock. Spray sits in backpack pocket when hiking.
I was there last weekend of September... Didn't have a problem. We hung our food, but the guy that hung it did a crappy job. I PCT hang it when I do it.
There was another group right next to us, they were in the shelter with two dogs. I would think a bear would have set the dogs to barking but we heard nothing all night.
EagleJ- Glad to hear that everyone is okay. That really stinks for the first timers not to get a chance to spend the night outdoors. Keep up the great work!
I have spent many nights in that same camp site and never had a problem, sorry to hear about your experience. We have had bears in our campsite on top of little green mountain but the last time that happened was probably 5 years ago.
We saw the warnings at Ivestor Gap this spring but didn't have any trouble their either.

Bummer that you had to hike it out. Without it, though, it would have been just the first time backpacking (well maybe not "just"). Now they have an epic story to tell for the rest of their lives! And, while a bear getting food is NEVER a good thing, the silver lining is that you'll never have to remind them to hang their food again.
