6 footers lead in sales at our shop followed closely by 8 footers. I get by in this area which is dominated by mid-size oaks with a pair of 6' huggers.

I've had 4', 6', and 8' but have decided that I like the 6' length. After several trips with the 8' straps I found I very rarely used the full strap (like maybe one time and I could have used other trees). So I think, for me, the 6' straps are perfect.

For myself, I use 6ft. straps since I also use whoopie slings. I just bought a hammock for my brother, and I am going to attach descender rings to each end and use webbing for the suspension. Since I won't be using whoopie slings for added length, I got him 10ft. straps.

I've been using the straps that came with my HH (6', I think), but just picked up a pair of narrower 8' ones from whoopieslings.com that should save weight and give me the added length I wanted. I found on a couple trips I was limited in my site selection by the shorter straps, and as was already mentioned you can wrap the longer straps around smaller trunks if you need to "shorten" them. I also liked the idea of sewing in an extra loop!

Technically, you really only need a strap along the backside of the tree, so a 2'-3' length would suffice, using cord to make up the difference. Another idea for you...
