Wow, I would not have guessed much of this stuff was strong enough, especially the roof racks. That 2x4 approach sounds particularly interesting.

This is off the side of the rear bumper. I can hang of the front, back or any corner. It doesn't put it as high as I normally like it, but it sure is handy.

Here is my flickr which has a few more of my setup.

That's a nice bumper with some really good brush coverage. Did you make it yourself or is it an aftermarket?

Bear in mind, my roof rack at least, isn't one of those (Plastic?) "for show" racks, that are for a bit of luggage & not much else, mine are for hauling ladders & other heavy stuff. I would be reluctant to hang from my wife's roof rack: similar van, plastic roof rack.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

I've hung off my car's plastic roof rack and a tree several times and that worked fine. But, that's not an option in a treeless area.

The Byer Madera may be an option. Has anyone hung from a car and Byer Madera hammock leg? Was the Madera tall enough for the car?

It is a custom built by a local guy with a small shop and was on the jeep when I got it. It is a lot like the arb bumper. It is really handy for hooking up the hammock. next time I go camping I will have to get a series of pictures of the jeep in camp mode. I have a whole setup that can range from just the hammock up to two hammocks and a covered cooking area. All this is always carried in the jeep, so I can literally stop for food and then drive in to the woods and be set for several weeks of camping.
