Hurricane Sandy roared through are area last night...so it was a perfect time to make some whoopie slings!

I followed the sticky, took my time, and made them without any real issue...I have no idea why I was so worried...

For anyone on the fence about it I recommend giving it a shot. It will save you some coin and lighten your rig. If you can change a tire on a car, you've probably got the mechanical skill to make DIY whoopies.

Next up: Adjustable ridgeline. Should be a cakewalk with all the leftover amsteel I have...

I've got the Amsteel, just been waiting for the time. I'm thinking a group hang this weekend might be the right time.

Splicing is fun isn't it?! What did you use to cut the strands you pulled out during the taper? I found trying to get them with scissors pretty annoying. Best thing I've found so far: toenail clippers!

An ASR will be a cakewalk for you. It's basically just a whoopie sling with slightly different measurements.

Cutting amsteel is best done with a sharp knife on a cutting block.

There's something about snipping those tails when I'm tapering. It's like trimming a bonsai tree. Very zen!

I agree! I use a hollow ground neck knife made of very hard S30V "supersteel" and a wooden cutting board. I hear that ceramic knives are perfect for this, too. (Harbor Freight sells them cheap).

Funny - never had any issues with a pair of scissors though I'm all into trying some 'zen' approaches. Congrats on the DIY - it only becomes more fun from here on out!

I was taking my time and didn't have the best tools, but it took me around 45 mins with the TV on and the occasional break to watch the transformers in my neighborhood blowing up.

I ended up using regular scissors, some scotch tape, and the straight section of a wire hanger to make the loop. I simply fed the hanger through the section of Amsteel where the bury was going to be, taped the taper down to the exposed part of the hanger, and pulled it through. I was going to make a backsplice but I'm not that worried about appearances yet so I just did a double overhand knot to stop it from slipping out.

I'm definitely going to up my game for the ARL and get something to make the bury that's a bit more gentle on the Amsteel like a guitar string. The rough ends of the hanger did snag a few times (which lead to an "oh no...nonono" moment), but it was fine overall. I'll also be attempting a fixed loop and backsplice.

Now that's funny.....you just haven't realized yet (and you will), that there is no such thing as "leftover amsteel". You were short on amsteel the moment you ordered what you have, so you might as well order another 100' now to prevent splicing withdrawal.

I bought 60' with the intent to make whoopies for both GTULs I recently bought, but I honestly don't see the point in rigging the other one...yet.

I'm also on the fence with the ARL too. I sort of like the simplicity of the GTUL w/o it.
