My take on the IX underquilt

Well, I finally was able to put my DIY DriDucks IXUQ to use. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=61992.
It worked out great. We had low temps in the upper 30's and a wind chill that put us at freezing. I had a 20 degree climasheild synthetic bag that I just laid over me. I did have to zip it up in the middle of the night. Other than that I was pretty cozy. My IXUQ is 48" x 60," weighing in at 19oz, and costing about $40. I believe the DriDucks poncho adds some extra warmth, and adds about 3oz. I wanted the poncho to remain functional so I used snaps to keep th IX in place. It is still a work in progress.

Very cool! (well, I mean toasty! )

I'm not familiar with that one - how many layers? Looks like you've got an outer shield but exposed IX inside? That's how I built mine, except I used TV wrap instead of real IX. Worked fine with two layers on the first try, but since the temps are dropping, I've added two more layers for a total of four plus the outer cover. Very impressed with the amount of instant warmth!

BTW, does yours use shock cord the whole way thru the channels? I'm using mason line in the channel with shock cord at the ends only. Seemed too "droopy" the other way, and I didn't want to have to tie up the middle. Maybe my shock cord's too wimpy?!?

Nicely done piece of work! Like the addition of the poncho - would be perfect for a friend.

No, I just use shock cord through the ends. I found it cinched up around the hammock just fine that way.

Thanks. My lack of thread injecting skills requires me to find other means, when I can.

How many layers of IX was that? I have two that I am putting inside a PLUQ and using in the 30's tonight. Just wondering if I'll need my sunshield to supplement. Thanks.

By the way, great work. looks good!

Thanks, I may try magnets on my next one. It's 3 layers. You may be okay, depending on your top layer. I haven't tried the PL's yet, Not sure how well they create a vapor barrier. Since the sun shield doesn't weigh much, I'd take it (j.i.c).
