I have also been wondering about this and will restate the question. Is cuben fiber or silnylon any less durable than the other? In their respective weights for the tarp specified.

I've got the Superfly and the HG 4 Season Cuben ... like them both and they both seem fairly durable within reason. I've had the Superfly longer ... but based on all the factors ... coverage, weight, function ... if I were just getting a tarp and only could get one ... I'd go with the Cuben HG 4 season.

I own a bmj (older spinn version) and carry just one set of the doors. and it's a good compromise of weight, coverage, and versatility. I do desire cuben however for the super weight savings, but the cost is keeping me down. Can't go wrong with the bmj.
i only have the 4sccc i like the tarp and so far its proven durable including being pulled out by 50 + mph winds after i went inside for the night and being slung up into a branch above nesting there in the wing for hours.you can imagine what i said, i wont say it here, but it was not hurt at all.i went to a top ridge line to cut down on abrasion.if you think you will ever move to a bridge hammock i would think about a 144 ridge line.i bought the standard size and have to use my doors for tarp extention because the tarp wont clear the suspension triangles on the rr.you will like the transparent view it is a cloudy view, but lightning, and the moon are really cool through it.it doesnt crinkle in the wind as much as you would think, but will look very wrinkly till it straightens out.i think you would be a win win no matter what you picked.good luck and enjoy your new gear.the cat cut makes a nice tight tarp.i wish you could get cuban in 12 by 12 cat cut.
ive been experimenting with the stuff sack the cuban tarp came in so i would have a better idea of what it take to hurt it its pretty tough id say it would be vunerable to abrasion and sharp puncture, but is very strong to stretch and blunt pressure.i have no experience to sill nylon.
One thing you havent considered is the zpacks cuben fiber tarp. I own one and is a great tarp just as light but little cheaper. I have had mine for over year with alot of use.I own the mamba as well great tarp
I backpack, mainly in AR, with others with the Cuban tarps. I have a camo Mamajamba myself. The comment that I hear sometimes is the amount of light that the Cuban material allows to pass through. If you plan to sleep past sun-up and sensitive to light or have a night that the moon is shining bright you might take this into consideration. All of their other comments are about how much they live the Cuban.
I've looked at the zpacks but they are $15 more than HG's Cuben. only difference I can find is 2 inches Cat cuts and tie outs for the doors to clip to. I was just planning on adding a couple prussics to my RL to tie the doors back to.
I don't think that the light will be much of a problem I work nights so i'm used to sleeping during the day, and when I camp I'm usually up with the sun anyway.
I am curious though is there much difference between cat cut and no cat cut with Cuben?
I have the Mamajamba and the doors, no complaints. If I could afford the Cuben Tarp I would have bought it, so it's on my upgrade list. Either way I think you'll come out on top. But, if you can swing the extra money and want the weight savings go for the Cuben Tarp.

Just pulled the trigger on a custom HG cuben. I have the Superfly and love it, but I want to lighten up a little further for summer. I would recommend giving Adam a call or a shoot them an email on the cat cut issue. When I spoke to him, he recommended a very minor cat cut to facilitate a little better pitch. Outstanding customer service BTW!
Cheers
