    Sock vs. UQ & TQ?

I'm in Florida, where a cold front means it gets into the 50's. I'm in learning/reading/exploring mode. I'm reading all the talk about UQ's, staying warm, etc. Look at me...I'm already using the secret language (acronyms) too!

I'm wondering if a hammock sock wouldn't eliminate the need for pads and UQ's in average weather? Doesn't a sock create a microclimate that elevates the temperature by up to 15 degrees?

I use a UQ no matter what the the temp is pretty much. anything over 80 I won't use it. I will say though, everyone is different so test it out for yourself and see...

And a big warm welcome from Guam!

the sock makes a killer micro climate. I would not use it to replace an UQ tho. it would give you warmth and block the breeze but it also blocks the sky. I love the sock in temps below 30, the work super awesome!

Mine raises the inside temperatures 15-20*, but I still use an underquilt - a lightweight IX type. You might want to look into making an IX UQ for down to 45 degrees or so. Both the sock and UQ would weigh very little.

The potential problem in Florida is the 100% humidity. It's true that you don't need much of a temperature boost (most of the year) and the sock is lighter and packs smaller than two quilts. However, you may end up with a sweat lodge that any Native American would be proud of

For that reason, a backyard practice run would be in order, as usual.

You may get a bit soggy in the sock in the Florida climes..........
If it were me , I would goUQ or pad first. My 7¢.

I've been letting a similar idea bounce around in the ol grey matter. In central Alabama we have a similar climate as Florida but with cooler winter nights (gets into the 20s often and teens occasionally). Still, the humidity is a huge factor so I was thinking a modified sock with the top open (partially) to allow the humidity to escape and reduce/prevent condensation build-up. As I have primarily pine trees to hang from, the view of the sky is obscured by the tarp anyways so a sock wouldn't change things much.

That would let the humidity out along with the heat, which defeats the purpose.

For those of us North of you and with not so much of the nicer weather, socks are used in conjunction with UQ and TQ. It helps build a micro climate and aids in keeping the wind at bay and robbing the UQ and TQ from it's heat. I've never even used my sock in 50 degree weather, we usually will break out the socks if it's windy or going to be 40 and below....but we always have an UQ.....or use a pad. I honestly don't see why you'd need a sock where you are, at least not to start with.

I would agree that a sock sounds like overkill in the 50's. You should be able to go with some pretty light weight stuff if you're only looking for a rating of 40* or so. The mix and match capability of two pieces seems more efficient to me.
